"It is a common cry of many scientists and economists that within the next 20 years we must implement a strategy to create an ecologically sustainable world and business is the most powerful vehicle to expedite that outcome."

In October, 2005, I hosted ONE Group director Alf Orpen in Eugene, Oregon to speak at the Eugene Bioneers Satellite Conference. Following is a photo of Alf presenting his work shop and a synopsis of his presentation: "Enterprise - An Environmental Revolution by Design".

“Enterprise - An Environmental Revolution by Design”

Introduction

We are rapidly moving towards a time when all technologies will mimic nature whilst delivering the standard of living society now expects, when advertising budgets will have the dual effects of product promotion and social education and when every business decision must consider future generations.

A true enterprise is an expression of the individuals purpose in life – business is like water – it has to keep moving to remain useful – if it stands still too long, it stagnates and goes into “liquidation”. Without water nothing would survive. Therefore water shows us that to fulfil our business goals, we must not only advance but also benefit society. This is indeed the true nature of business.

Methodology

The business of the future will a far greater vision than its own survival and deliver products with such an environmental advantage that it cannot but succeed. Part of that vision will involve education, for it is through education that business can make its greatest impact.

The ‘education’ of society, is the responsibility of every body that interacts with it, be it social or corporate.

Summary

Good stories abound: Alf gives some inspirational examples of corporations that are not simply dreaming of, but actualising a preferred future.

Bio-mimicry today and not tomorrow: Actual technologies that are currently demonstrating that nature is the best example to design such things as buildings that breath, packaging that grows and indigenous energy sources.

Education based promotions: Socially responsible companies that educate and not market, inform and not sell, allow people to make decisions and not attempt to convince them.

Conclusion

It is a common cry of many scientists and economists that within the next 20 years we must implement a strategy to create an ecologically sustainable world and business is the most powerful vehicle to expedite that outcome.
